Every day over 20 million gallons of oil flow through the aging twin Line 5 pipelines located in the heart of the Great Lakes, used as a shortcut to take crude tar sands oil from Alberta to Ontario. Our climate and precious fresh water resources are put at risk for fossil fuel profit by a company that has already caused the largest inland oil spill in US history.
Line 5 is owned by Enbridge Inc, which is trying to block action by the State of Michigan and the The Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa to protect the Great Lakes from a catastrophic oil pipeline rupture in Lake Michigan and Lake Huron by shutting down Line 5.
Line 5 violates Native Treaty Rights, runs through the Straits of Mackinac - the worst place in the Great lakes for an oil spill to occur - and has already spilled at least 1.1 million gallons along its length. Intended to last 50 years, it has now been operating for 70 years. A proposed oil tunnel, with multiple problems red flagged by engineering experts, would keep Line 5 open for another 10 years if it is ever built.
Along with challenging Michigan Governor Whitmer's decision to revoke Enbridge's easement, the court decision that Line 5 is trespassing on The Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa territory, and fighting dozens of Tribal Nations in court, Enbridge is claiming Canada has authority over oil pipelines in Michigan's water and asking Canadian officials to appeal to President Biden for help. We need our President to protect our climate and our water, not fossil fuels.
President Biden can revoke the presidential permit for Enbridge’s 70-year-old Line 5 crude oil pipeline that threatens the drinking water of 40 million Americans. Canada and Big Oil are mounting legal challenges to American laws that protect our waters and investments that slow climate change.
Speak up today: Ask President Biden to protect the Great Lakes by using his executive authority to decommission Enbridge’s twin Line 5 oil pipelines in the Straits of Mackinac, and ask your Representative and Senators in Congress to do the same. We need to shut down Line 5 - before it's too late.
